Profile former CWI director and CWI Fellow Jan Karel Lenstra (2008)
Jan Karel Lenstra is from a family of mathematicians. His father and two of his brothers are mathematicians. But he thinks his field of research, combinatorial optimization, should be assigned to computer science rather then mathematics. Jan Karel started his career at CWI as a researcher in the field of sequencing and scheduling, routing, complexity, approximation and local search methods. After a few years as a professor in Atlanta (US), he returned to the CWI to become its general director.
In memoriam Dr.ir. Jeroen A.S. Witteveen (1980 – 2015)
Aangeslagen en bedroefd delen wij mee dat Jeroen Witteveen, onderzoeker bij het Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) te Amsterdam, is overleden. Jeroen verkoos zijn einde vlak voor zijn vijfendertigste verjaardag.

Soiree 65 jaar Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica
In 2011 bestaat het Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica 65 jaar. Ter markering van dit jubileum organiseert het CWI een feestelijke avond op donderdag 10 februari.Bij deze gelegenheid wordt de Van Wijngaarden Award uitgereikt aan twee onderzoekers die een bijzondere betekenis hebben voor de wiskunde en de informatica:
Hannes Mühleisen wint Nederlandse Prijs voor ICT Onderzoek 2025
De Nederlandse Prijs voor ICT Onderzoek 2025 is toegekend aan Hannes Mühleisen, senior onderzoeker bij het Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) en hoogleraar Data Engineering aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen.
Wiskunde helpt om vrijwilligers sneller bij noodgeval te krijgen
In noodgevallen, zoals bij een hartstilstand of een brand, zijn vrijwilligers soms sneller ter plaatse dan hulpdiensten. CWI-onderzoeker Rob van der Mei onderzoekt samen met collega’s van de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam en de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam hoe je vrijwilligers in noodsituaties optimaal kunt inzetten. Dit doen ze met een subsidie van 500.000 euro van Dinalog.

Daniel Dadush is benoemd tot deeltijdhoogleraar Geometry of Optimization aan de Universiteit Utrecht.
CWI-directeur en Management Team
CWI bestaat uit 15 onderzoeksgroepen en verschillende ondersteunende afdelingen. Het instituut wordt geleid door de directeur prof. dr. ir. A.G. (Ton) de Kok, instituutsmanager Dick Broekhuis en het managementteam (MT). CWI staat onder toezicht van het Stichtingsbestuur NWO-I, en wordt geadviseerd door de Instituutsadviescommissie (IAR), Wetenschappelijke Adviescommissie (SAC) en Ondernemingsraad (OR).
Geschiedenis CWI: 75 jaar baanbrekend onderzoek
In 2021 vierde het CWI zijn 75e verjaardag. Wat een geschiedenis hebben we om trots op te zijn!
Halvering wachtlijsten in de ouderenzorg mogelijk door nieuw wiskundig model

KWG looft Brouwerprijs uit aan Phillip Griffiths
Het Koninklijk Wiskundig Genootschap (KWG) reikt op 14 juli 2008 de Brouwerprijs uit aan de befaamde wiskundige Phillip A. Griffiths (1938). Dit gebeurt tijdens het Fifth European Congress of Mathematics (5ECM), waarvan Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica, de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam en de Universiteit van Amsterdam voortrekkers zijn.
BRICKS consortium wint Best of Bsik: the Battle
CWI, NWO, Universiteit Utrecht, TU Delft, TU Eindhoven, Universiteit Twente Op het Bsik-event dat donderdag 7 december 2006 plaatsvond in het Erasmus Expo-en Congrescentrum in Rotterdam heeft het BRICKS consortium de hoofdprijs van 10.000 euro gewonnen.
NWO Team Science Award for CWI with UvA and Rijksmuseum
A team of researchers from CWI, Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA), Rijksmuseum and Universiteit Leiden (UL) have been awarded the first NWO Team Science Award for their research on the Hugo de Groot book chest.
The week of quantum computing
Starting 12 January 2015, the Universiteit van Nederland publishes five public lectures by Harry Buhrman, head of the research group quantum computing at CWI. The series of lectures features the do's and don'ts of the computer of the future. From Monday through Friday, a new lecture will be available on the site of the Universiteit van Nederland each day.
