Postdoc (m/f/x)

Enabling digital twins for cultural heritage research

Job description

The goal of the project is to enable digital twins for cultural heritage based on multi-modal data (CT, photogrammetry, text, biometrics, ...). The vision of the project is to allow researchers, conservators, and the public to engage with the objects both visually and through queries. You will be part of the EXCALIBUR consortium and work together with the consortium partners to develop computational tools for enabling digital twins in cultural heritage science, mainly aimed at archeological finds. The computational group at CWI has an in-house imaging lab, enabling the methods to be tested on-site. The developed tools will be validated on selected case studies and incorporated in the European Cultural Heritage Cloud.

Requirements

We are looking for a researcher with a PhD in mathematics/computer science and/or cultural heritage (or related). The ideal candidate has good collaborative and networking skills and affinity with 3D image reconstruction and visualization, AI for imaging, computed tomography and/or photogrammetry.

Terms and conditions

We offer a postdoc in a multi-disciplinary, international, environment at the computational imaging group at CWI, Amsterdam. You will have the opportunity to shape your own research directions within the framework of the project and benefit of the international network offered by the project.

The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres ("CAO-onderzoeksinstellingen"). The gross monthly salary for an employee on a full time basis, depending on relevant work experience, ranges from € 4,247 to € 5,590. The position is available for a maximum of three years. Diversity code

CWI strives to be a diverse and inclusive research institute. To achieve balanced representation in positions, we have been investing in a diverse and inclusive organization already since 2010, among others by prioritizing applications from women researchers. This approach has recently led to hiring a majority of women in Tenure Track positions.

CWI encourages a diverse workforce: we endeavour to develop talent and creativity by bringing people from different backgrounds and cultures together. We strongly encourage candidates with the appropriate qualifications to apply for the vacancy, regardless of age, origin, sexual orientation or physical abilities.

About CWI

Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) is the Dutch national research institute for mathematics and computer science and is part of the Institutes Organisation of the Dutch Research Council (NWO). The mission of CWI is to conduct pioneering research in mathematics and computer science, generating new knowledge in these fields and conveying it to trade, industry, and society at large.

CWI is an internationally oriented institute, with 160 scientists from approximately 27 countries, an informal atmosphere and short lines of communication. We have an activity committee that organizes after-work activities and among others a women’s network.

CWI is located at Science Park Amsterdam, which is a major location of research in the physical sciences in The Netherlands, housing the sciences of the University of Amsterdam as well as several other national research institutes next to CWI.

About Research group

Our research group is developing the next generation of 3D imaging – enabling scientists to look further into objects of all kinds. Based on mathematics, algorithms and numerical solution techniques, our approach is interdisciplinary, combining aspects of mathematics, computer science and physics. We pride ourselves on the versatility of our solutions, and our algorithms can be applied to a wide range of imaging in science, medicine and industry. In Computational Imaging, it’s our goal to constantly push the boundaries of research. By combining advanced image acquisition, parameter estimation, and discrete tomography algorithms for example, we can develop workflows for 3D electron microscopy at atomic resolution.
