Dissertation on data science receives Cum Laude
Joris Pries received a Cum Laude for his dissertation on the fundamentals of data science. In his research he strived to tackle general problems that are a fundamental yet underexposed part of data science.

Computer scientist Tessel Bogaard has demonstrated how metadata can improve our understanding of online search behaviour in vertical search engines that grant access to curated collections. She defended her thesis on 10 May at the Vrije Universiteit.

School Visit Lyceum Kralingen
Around 40 school children of the Lyceum Kralingen from Rotterdam will visit CWI for a Programming workshop/Hackathon. The programme is organised by Jurgen Vinju and Tijs van der Storm of CWI's SWAT group and initiated by Felienne Hermans (researcher at the Vrije Universiteit and teacher at the Lyceum Kralingen).

Quantum computing
Quantumcomputers verschillen fundamenteel van de huidige, klassieke computers. Daardoor kunnen ze veel sneller berekeningen maken, en soms ook op een veiligere manier. Ze gebruiken hiervoor qubits, het quantummechanische equivalent van de klassieke bit.
Léo Ducas benoemd tot hoogleraar Wiskundige Cryptologie in Leiden
Léo Ducas is aangesteld als deeltijdhoogleraar Mathematische Cryptologie aan de Universiteit Leiden. Bij het CWI ontwierp hij al verschillende cryptosystemen, waarvan sommige binnenkort misschien als nieuwe internationale standaarden worden aangenomen.
In Memoriam Martin Kersten
Prof. dr. M.L. (Martin) Kersten, fellow van het CWI, en emeritus hoogleraar informatica aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, is overleden op 6 juli 2022.

CWI-scanner onthult kunstgeheimen
Met de bijzondere FleX-ray scanner van CWI wordt de binnenkant van kunststukken bekeken, maar de scanner is ook inzetbaar voor andere toepassingen zoals de kwaliteitscontrole van voedsel.
Collaboration with Dutch Universities
Currently, more than thirty CWI researchers hold part-time appointments at ten Dutch universities. By teaching and supervising students in MSc-projects or during a CWI internship, they contribute to the education of young mathematicians and computer scientists.
