On 21 January, the working group Culture and Media of the Dutch AI Coalition handed over the position paper 'The Art of AI for All' to Barbara Wolfensberger, Director General of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. Laura Hollink, CWI group leader of Human-Centered Data Analytics (HCDA), co-authored the position paper and is part of the working group Culture and Media.

The position paper 'The Art of AI for Everyone' aims to promote AI innovations for the culture and media sector in the Netherlands. On the one hand, AI changes the culture and media sector through the development of new technological possibilities that can help both creators, users and cultural institutions ('AI for culture'). On the other hand, the culture and media sector itself can contribute to a fairer, more inclusive, more diverse and more transparent application of AI in our society ('Culture for AI').

On the role of CWI in 'AI for culture' and 'Culture for AI' Laura Hollink says: "My research group wants to contribute to the responsible application of AI in the media and culture sector. This requires a translation of ethical principles and cultural values into concrete metrics, experimental design and system design. For example, we are working on the automatic detection of words in cultural heritage collections that can be seen as racist or non-inclusive. Think of an old newspaper that calls an Indonesian dignitary 'exotic' or an exhibition that uses the word 'aboriginal suit' in a caption. We are also working on transparent AI and exploring how to give users enough information to trust the output of an AI system, and to make informed decisions about its use."
