Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) has a vacancy in the Machine Learning research group for a talented Postdoc/researcher (m/f/x).
Job description
We are looking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher with expertise in the area of spiking neural networks and an interest in (applications of) probabilistic computing.
The postdoc candidate will participate in the NWO NWA project "Acting under uncertainty". The goal of this project is to advance our understanding of how humans are able to act in complex and uncertain circumstances, and how such knowledge can be applied to smooth our interaction with emerging autonomous vehicles. The whole project encompasses a broad spectrum of academic, industrial and societal partners and includes a large group or researchers. The postdoc position will advance state-of-the-art in spiking neural networks and their real-world applicability in applications like drones and other autonomous vehicles, in close collaboration with labs at TU Delft, IMEC NL, and NLR. Some project management related tasks will also be part of the candidate's responsibilities.
Requirements
Candidates are required to have a PhD degree in computer science, mathematics, electrical and electronic engineering, or related fields. Candidates are expected to have a demonstrable interest in bio-inspired neural networks and probabilistic approaches, and to have an excellent command of English.
Needed qualifications for candidates include proven research talent and good academic writing and presentation skills.
Terms and conditions
The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres ("CAO-onderzoeksinstellingen"). The gross monthly salary for an employee on a full-time basis, depending on relevant work experience, ranges from € 4.501 to € 5.486. The appointment will be for a period of 24 months.
Employees are also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.33%. CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling.

Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) is the Dutch national research institute for mathematics and computer science and is part of the Institutes Organisation of the Dutch Research Council (NWO). The mission of CWI is to conduct pioneering research in mathematics and computer science, generating new knowledge in these fields and conveying it to trade, industry, and society at large.
CWI is an internationally oriented institute, with 160 scientists from approximately 27 countries, an informal atmosphere and short lines of communication. We have an activity committee that organizes after-work activities and an informal women’s network.
CWI is located at Amsterdam Science Park, which is a major location for scientific research in the Netherlands. Next to CWI, Science Park houses several other national research institutes, many startups and scale-ups, the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX), and the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam.
About Research group
The CWI Machine Learning research group focuses on how computer programs can learn from and understand data, and then make useful predictions based on it. These algorithms integrate insights from various fields, including statistics, artificial intelligence and neuroscience.
