Abstract: Computational imaging is a key technology for many applications; ranging from medicine, earth sciences, material science, and art history. Many imaging problems can be formulated as a linear inverse problem. In recent years, variational formulations have become popular for solving such inverse problems. Insights from convex and stochastic optimisation can then be brought to bear to solve such problems. Practical issues, such as calibration issues and misalignment, give rise to more intricate (non-linear) optimisation problems. Many of the resulting optimisation problems admit a separable or bi-level structure which can be exploited when designing algorithms.
In this talk, I give an overview of the interplay between inverse problems and optimisation, and discuss some recent successes as well as future challenges.
