Most Influential Paper award for SWAT researchers at SCAM ‘19

The genetic code of the last universal common ancestor of all present life on earth, appears to be surprisingly advanced. In his PhD thesis, Peter van der Gulik provides mathematical tools to reconstruct this genetic code. He also proposes a new parameter to characterize the genetic code that provides information about the production of amino acids.
National Agenda on Quantum Technology released
The Dutch National Agenda on Quantum Technology is presented to State Secretary Mona Keijzer this afternoon by physicist Robbert Dijkgraaf. The Agenda provides propositions to further develop the Netherlands as an international centre for quantum technology.

In Memoriam Piet Hemker
With sadness we announce that CWI Fellow and former CWI researcher Piet Hemker passed away on 27 May. Hemker had been working at CWI from 1970–2006 and since 1989 also as a professor at the UvA. He has been a CWI Fellow since 2001 and was named Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion in 2006.
CWI researcher develops a unifying framework for quantum algorithms
A large group of quantum algorithms can now be easier understood and optimized, using a new framework developed by QuSoft researcher András Gilyén. In his PhD thesis Gilyén provides a framework that unifies quantum algorithms, while optimizing their hardware requirements. His thesis was awarded cum laude
CWI grieved by death of former director Cor Baayen
CWI's former director Cor Baayen passed away last Wednesday. Baayen served as the institute’s director from 1980 to 1994. During this period he played a key role in shaping computer science as a distinct scientific field. Under his leadership CWI transformed from a mathematical institute to a center of expertise for both mathematics and computer science.
