During the recently held PatOlympics (June 2011), an international competition between researchers competing interactively for locating the best search results in patent literature, Spinque, a spin-off company of the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), received for the second time in a row the highest award in the category ‘Cross-Lingual Retrieving’.

During the competition search technology company Spinque retrieved 25 relevant patents, 19 more than the second best system. Also the user satisfaction of the system had been significantly improved compared to last year. With complex queries Spinque technology allows users to analyse different aspects of the search and combine results of these queries - without losing results.

Spinque develops search technology for information specialists, combining the key advantages of databases and information retrieval. The company is founded in 2010 by three researchers from the ‘Interactive Information Access’ research group from CWI. The establishment of spin-off companies such as Spinque is an important instrument for CWI to transfer technology and knowledge to society and industry.
