The Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica (CWI) is rated 'excellent' by an international evaluation committee. The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research NWO announced this in a press release on March 15, 2006. "The combination of mathematics and computer science and fundamental and applied research gives the institute a strong and unique position in the international research landscape," NWO said. NWO subjected six institutes to an external evaluation: ASTRON, CWI, ING, NIOZ, NSCR and SRON.

The international experts visited CWI in March 2005, to look at results from the past, new developments and strategy. "Overall, CWI is a strong research institute with high quality researchers working on highly relevant research themes," they said. The committee made several recommendations, for example on the gender issue: "Only two of the 17 theme leaders are female." Having listed the observations and recommendations, the committee "wished to stress that CWI is a powerful and vibrant institute with a strong track record and a healthy future. NWO has every reason to be proud of CWI."
