Living cells play dice!: stochastic processes in cell biology
The molecular networks inside living cells display remarkably stochasticity. Single-molecule measurements techniques allow the quantitative characterization of the stochastic dynamics inside living cells. In this presentation, I will discuss some of those experimental findings and show how stochastic theory and mathematical models are being used in this field to address biological questions. These studies indicate also the limitations of current mathematics of stochastic processes regarding modelling and theory of stochastic systems with non-exponential waiting times for elementary processes and parameter estimation from stochastic time serie data.
