The education project DisWis won the SIGMA prize during the Lowlands festival on 16 August. After a presentation by Niels Oosterling and a short movie in which Lex Schrijver, interviewed by the ‘Wiskundemeisjes’, explained DisWis, the jury was unanimous: DisWis is this year’s most magnificent project to connects mathematics to real world applications.
DisWis was founded by Spinoza Prize winner Lex Schrijver (CWI and UvA) and ‘De Praktijk’ – a project agency for science education and communication. The project includes a series of 40 lessons on discrete mathematics, given by ‘real mathematics students’. Pupils also learn about work after studying maths, and they visit companies.
The SIGMA prize is a study trip of 5000 euros. DisWis works hard to get more mathematics students in the classrooms of more Dutch schools.
