PhDs for image retrieval, modelling gas discharges and constraint programming

Three CWI researchers have successfully defended their Ph.D. theses last weeks. Thijs Westerveld from the Database Management and Information Retrieval theme obtained his degree from the University of Twente on November 26. His research focused on techniques to search for images in a database using a sample picture. Danijela Šijačić from the Nonlinear Dynamics and Complex Systems theme graduated on December 2 at the Eindhoven University of Technology. Her thesis deals with numerical and analytical solutions of a physical model of electrical discharges in gases.

Danijela Šijačić from the Nonlinear Dynamics and Complex Systems theme graduated on December 2 at the Eindhoven University of Technology. Her thesis deals with numerical and analytical solutions of a physical model of electrical discharges in gases.

Finally Sebastian Brand from the Networks and Logic – Optimization and Programming theme defended his thesis on December 3 at the University of Amsterdam. His work describes a technique to solve constraint satisfaction problems. This type of problems deals with finding arrangements that obey certain restrictions, for example scheduling a sports competition.
