Database consulting company MonetDB Solutions newest spin-off CWI

Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) is announcing the foundation of its new spin off MonetDB Solutions, a consulting company specialised in the development of database technologies for Business Analytics.

MonetDB Solutions is established by the founders of the world's first and most widespread open-source column-store database management system MonetDB. It combines world-leading researchers and engineers to provide its customers with tailored services and packaged solutions.  Its core services involve technical consultancy, architectural review, performance assessment, migration & upgrade services and training. The company is led by Dr. Ying Zhang.

MonetDB has pioneered the columns-store technology since 1993.  It has users in 130+ countries from both industry and research, and 300,000+ downloads.  For OLAP workloads, MonetDB typically performance 10+ times better than traditional row-store database systems, while retaining competitive performance for OLTP workloads.  The high performance of MonetDB comes from its purely column-based storage scheme and rigorous optimisations for modern hardware, such as In-Memory optimisation, Multi-core CPU optimisation and automatic & adaptive indices.  In Big Data analytics, MonetDB enables significant reduction of hardware investments for its customers.

Today, open-source has become the driving force behind many enterprise IT innovations, operational effectiveness and business value creation. Open-source Users not only benefit from significant cost savings, but also from higher software quality, reliability, sustainability and fast response to feature requests.

The establishment of spin-off companies such as MonetDB Solutions is an important instrument for CWI to transfer technology and knowledge to society and industry. Also based on the MonetDB technology, two successful CWI spin-offs were founded: Data Distilleries was founded in 1995 and acquired by SPSS in 2003, VectorWise was founded in 2008 and acquired by Actian Corporation (formerly Ingres Corporation) in 2011.  Since 2011, column-store technology as pioneered in MonetDB has found its way into the product offerings of all major commercial database vendors.
