A meeting at the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research NWO in The Hague on April 15 marked the official start of the CWI-coordinated BRICKS project. In the presence of NWO officials and industrial partners, the project leaders presented the research goals. BRICKS (Basic Research for Creating the Knowledge Society) is part of the Government funded Bsik program to strengthen the Dutch knowledge economy.

The program reinforces fundamental ICT research in parallel and distributed computing, modeling, simulation and visualization, intelligent systems, and algorithms and formal methods. These four areas promise both scientific challenges and relevant applications. BRICKS builds on the existing expertise of CWI and its partners Utrecht University, Eindhoven University of Technology, Delft University of Technology, and Twente University. NWO also participates with a grant program for talented ICT researchers.
