About CWI
CWI is the national research center for mathematics and computer science in The Netherlands, located at the Amsterdam Science Park. CWI is part of the Foundation for Dutch Scientific Research Institutes (NWO-I). CWI accommodates 15 research groups, has about 200 employees with 25 nationalities. CWI's research focuses on fundamental research problems derived from societal needs. Our institute has strong international links, and we enjoy an excellent worldwide reputation for our innovative research.
A proud heritage
CWI was founded in 1946 and has a rich history. Bright minds in mathematics and computer science work at the institute, conducting fundamental, ground-breaking research that lays the foundation for future scientific breakthroughs. CWI strives to share the knowledge it acquires with society, and its research therefore always has societal impact. This has proven itself repeatedly over the years.
Research highlights
Our institute was the birthplace of the European internet in 1988. We registered one of the first country domains in the world, .nl, in 1986. We built the first Dutch computer in 1952 and kick-started the development of the popular programming language Python in the 1990s. CWI has an entrepreneurial spirit. So far, it has founded 28 spin-off companies.
Our research focus areas
Research is carried out in four research focus themes: Algorithms, Data and Intelligent Systems, Cryptography and Security, and Quantum Computing. We find it important to share our knowledge with science students. That is why CWI researchers spend about 10 percent of their time on teaching at Dutch universities. For example by supervising master students who are writing their thesis.
CWI maintains excellent relations with industry and the academic world, at home as well as abroad. As we host some of the most excellent researchers in their field, we focus on sharing their results with the outside world, for example through organizing scientific events.
Working at CWI
CWI cares for its employees. We have excellent terms of employment and pay great attention to diversity and inclusion. And of course, the library and computing facilities are first-rate. Services include career planning, training & courses, assistance in finding housing, and tailor-made solutions to problems that may occasionally arise. Of course there is also room for relaxation! The groups are close-knit and undertake many fun activities together. CWI offers mindfulness classes, yoga and has an active Activity committee that organizes nice activities for everyone at our institute.
