Movie from archive: Earth and life sciences

In geo- and bio-research, conventional experimentation is being increasingly replaced by modelling and simulation. In the coming years, these methods will be crucial in cell biology and in research on large-scale ecological systems. The use of simulation and modelling solidify the role of mathematics and computer science in the earth and life sciences. Interdisciplinary research projects stimulate a cooperation that breaks barriers and bundles knowledge.

Challenge: earlier detection of tumor growth

The silicon cell is a metaphor for an ambitious computer model in which the fundamental processes in a living cell can be simulated. The model can contribute to the earlier detection of tumor growth and to its effective treatment. The silicon cell will help the pharmaceutical industry develop targetted medicines and use cell biology for their production. CWI will strengthen its contribution to this research.
