Movie from archive: The data explosion

The explosion in the amount of digital data confronts society with new questions. How can relevant and compact information be found from a flood of data? There is a significant need for models, methods and techniques that allow the mountain of data to be tunneled, to be studied and exploited. CWI uses its expertise in data management and learning to play a guiding role in the development of technology that will manage the data explosion.

Challenge: the digital time machine

Our world, society and culture are all being encoded in digital form. This suggests the possibility of a digital time machine: a software architecture and infrastructure in which media, time and location flow together into one digital reconstruction. The time machine will allow our children to experience the world of their grandparents. The technology also holds the promise of restructuring the web as we know it. CWI will provide additional resources for this work.
