Hogeschool van Amsterdam lecturer and researcher at Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) Nanda Piersma has been appointed crown member of the Social and Economic Council (SER). The Council of Ministers approved her appointment on Friday. It is the first time that a lecturer from the higher professional education sector has been appointed to the SER.

Piersma was approached because of her expertise in the field of digitisation. According to the SER, digitisation is becoming ever more important. Piersma is lecturer Responsible IT at the HvA and researcher at the Intelligent & Autonomous Systems group CWI. She is also scientific director of the HvA Expertise Centre for Applied Artificial Intelligence. In addition, Piersma is involved in various national networks around data science, such as the platform for practice-based ICT research (Prio) and the Dutch AI coalition (NLAIC).

Piersma did not hesitate to accept the invitation to join the SER. "I am looking forward to giving my vision on socio-economic issues from my expertise in the field of digitisation. It is my passion and mission to get digitalisation applied in a responsible way. In the SER, I can give advice on important themes. In the other networks I am part of, I can contribute to the development of concrete proposals. In this way, these functions complement each other wonderfully."

HvA Rector Geleyn Meijer is also pleased with Piersma's appointment and what it means for the HBO. "Applied research provides useful and applicable answers to social problems and is the driving force behind the innovative capacity of the Netherlands. It is therefore appropriate that Nanda Piersma, with her expertise and extensive network, is given a place on the SER. The HvA is extremely proud that Nanda is going to hold this position, as the first crown member from the higher professional education sector."

Ton de Kok, director of CWI says: "Nanda bridged the gap between practice-based research on AI at the HvA and the fundamental research on AI at CWI. Besides that she has built up an impressive network within the AI world, allowing her to to quickly connect with stakeholders and contribute to important issues like applications of AI in the energy sector and democratic decision-making."
