CWI leads European network of imaging specialists

Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) will lead the research network EXTREMA, which was officially launched yesterday with a kick-off meeting in Brussels. EXTREMA aims to create an interdisciplinary research community consisting of both X-ray specialists and mathematicians. Together they will work on the next generation of imaging techniques to advance both science and industrial R&D.

CWI researcher Joost Batenburg was elected to lead the network that consists of research institutes from 17 European countries. The computational imaging research group at CWI headed by Batenburg has significant experience in developing mathematical algorithms that are used by imaging specialists in material sciences, life sciences and medicine.

Various experimental techniques based on X-rays can be used to make detailed images of objects that are otherwise hidden from view, such as metal objects and living cells. These techniques are of great value in both science and industry. To develop new, more detailed images, advances are needed in both imaging technology to create better scans, and mathematical image reconstruction to extract more information from these scans. The EXTREMA community brings these two fields together to exchange experiences, ideas and computational tools.

EXTREMA, which stands for Enhanced X-Ray Tomographic Reconstruction: Experiment, Modeling and Algorithms, is a COST Action Group. COST is an intergovernmental framework for European Cooperation in Science and Technology, aimed at reducing fragmentation and improving cooperation in European research. In the next four years, EXTREMA will organize a variety of network activities such as workshops, summer schools and PhD exchanges.
