Jan Verwer passed away unexpectedly on 16 February 2011, at his home in Heiloo.


Jan Verwer passed away unexpectedly on 16 February 2011, at his home in Heiloo.

Jan Verwer retired on 31 January, after a 37 years career as a highly successful mathematician and research leader at CWI – the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica in Amsterdam. Jan started his CWI career as a teaching assistant and ended it as a CWI Fellow. He also held the chair Numerical Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Amsterdam. On the occasion of his retirement, he was named Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion.

Jan Verwer made impressive contributions to Numerical Mathematics and Computational Science. He was an internationally leading mathematical researcher. He was the author of two books and numerous highly cited articles in renowned scientific journals. He guided and inspired many young researchers in the Netherlands and abroad.

For many years he was the leader of the CWI research cluster Modelling, Analysis and Simulation, leader of the national BRICKS research project, and chairman of the Dutch-Flemish Research Community on Scientific Computing.

During his entire career, Jan Verwer served the Netherlands as a true ambassador to the international scientific community.

We will remember Jan as a highly dedicated, modest and honest person, enjoyed and respected by his colleagues. Our thoughts and feelings are with his wife, three children and grandchild.


The funeral ceremony starts on 22 February, 13.30 h, Ter Coulsterkerk, Holleweg 111, Heiloo.
