Jan Karel Lenstra appointed CWI Fellow

Jan Karel Lenstra has been appointed CWI Fellow per October 1, 2011. He received this distinction because of his contributions to research and administration at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam. From 2003 to 2011 Lenstra was general director of CWI. Previously, from 1969 to 1989, he was a prominent researcher at the institute. For six years he served as head of the Department of Operations Research and System Theory.

Lenstra will continue to spend his time at CWI on research and administrative tasks. He will pursue his research in discrete optimization as a member of the group on Algorithms, Combinatorics and Optimization. He will also play a role in lobbying activities on behalf of CWI, e.g., in relation to the top sectors selected by the government.

Lenstra is taking part in various external activities, nationally and internationally. In particular, he is involved in a number of advisory committees on mathematics and computer science in primary and secondary education. In 2009 he chaired the ‘Commissie rekenonderwijs op de basisschool’ (Committee mathmematics in primary education) of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).
