An article on fighting lymph cancer with mathematics - research of Gunnar Klau at CWI - features in the latest issue of ERCIM News.

What does a disease like lymph cancer have in common with city heating? This unusual association popped up when CWI researcher Gunnar Klau discussed his work with a fellow researcher. Klau now exploits maths originally developed for optimizing heating networks to analyse data from cancer patients. His method appears to be faster and better than previous ones. For this research, Klau and his fellow researchers won the Outstanding Paper Award at ISMB 2008 (16th Annual International Conference Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology) in Toronto, Canada. He cooperates closely with medical research partners like the Nederlands Kanker Instituut (NKI). It is hoped that his results will help doctors in understanding the disease and in the end contribute to the quest for new and better medicines.

The full article on this topic, written by Gunnar Klau and Annette Kik, can be found in the R&D Section of ERCIM News 77, the quarterly magazine of ERCIM - the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics. Other topics in this issue are 'Future Internet Technology' and '20 years of ERCIM'. CWI's former directors Gerard van Oortmerssen and Cor Baayen wrote a testimonial on ERCIM, as did Henk Nieland, CWI's former press officer. Viviane Reding, Member of the European Commission Information Society & Media, wrote the introduction to this issue.
