At the BNAIC 2009, the annual Benelux Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Peter Bosman of the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam, received a Best Paper Award for his paper ‘On Empirical Memory Design, Faster Selection of Bayesian Factorizations and Parameter-Free Gaussian EDAs’. According to the jury his article is a must read in its discipline. The results of his research can be applied in various areas such as logistics and the social service sector.
Peter Bosman focuses in his research on Computational Intelligence and Multi-agent Games. For the award in the category ‘Recently Internationally Published’ fifty-nine papers were submitted. Out of three final nominations, the paper by Bosman was ultimately chosen.
The research by Bosman is fundamental and concerns Estimation of Distribution Algorithms (EDAs), a specific type of evolutionary algorithm for optimization goals. The research shows how an EDA can be adapted using learning techniques in such a way that similar results can be obtained with the use of less computing resources. The results of his research can be applied to numerous societal issues and industry. In logistics it can for instance be applied to optimize processes in supply chain management. But also hospitals can benefit from his research, facilitating optimization of the use of their resources (e.g. beds and staff) which improves the total throughput of patients.
This year the 21st edition of the BNAIC was held. At the BNAIC researchers in artificial intelligence gather to share their knowledge and latest results. It mainly concerns researchers from the Benelux.
