Last November, Silvia Rossi, postdoctoral researcher in the Distributed and Interactive System (DIS) group, was appointed Director of Conference for the ACM Special Interest Group on Multimedia (SIGMM). She was nominated by the SIGMM Executive Committee (Alberto Del Bimbo, SIGMM Chair and Phoebe Chen, SIGMM Vice-Chair) and the previous SIGMM Director of Conference, Miriam Redi, to serve until the end of the current term in June 2025. In this role, Silvia is responsible for monitoring and supervising SIGMM conference organization teams, chairing the steering committee for the SIGMM flagship conference, ACM Multimedia, and being part of the SIGMM Board.

Elections for the next SIGMM executive committee (July 2025 - June 2027) are now open, and all SIGMM members are invited to vote for the three new Chair, Vice Chair, and Director of Conferences. Silvia is running as a candidate for Director of Conference.

About SIGMM and Silvia Rossi’s Role in the Community

SIGMM provides a forum for researchers, engineers, and practitioners in all aspects of multimedia computing, communication, storage, and applications. SIGMM sponsors the ACM Multimedia Conference series (i.e., ACM Multimedia, ACM Multimedia System, etc.) and ad hoc workshops on emerging areas of multimedia. In addition, SIGMM supports the ACM Transactions on Multimedia, Applications, and Computing (TOMM).

Silvia Rossi is a postdoctoral researcher of the Distributed and Interactive Systems (DIS) group at Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in the Netherlands. She received her PhD from University College London (UCL), London (UK) in 2022 with the thesis “Understanding user interactivity for the next-generation immersive communication: design, optimisation, and behavioural analysis”, which received the SIGMM Award for Outstanding PhD Thesis in Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications in 2023. After one year as an ERCIM fellow, she is now a postdoctoral researcher involved in different European research projects (TRANSMIXR, INDUX-R and SPIRIT open call). Her journey into the SIGMM community began with her first attended conference, MMSys 2018 and a few years later, she joined the organising committee of MMsys as social media chair in few editions. Last year, she was workshop chair of MMVE co-located with MMsys 2024; this year, she is Program Coordinator and Technical Program Chair of MMsys 2025 in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Since 2020, she is also Information Director of SIGMM Record, the group’s quarterly online newsletter. Truly passionate about multimedia and technology, her research interests are around immersive media systems, at the crossroads between multimedia processing, data processing and analysis, machine learning, and communication systems.
