The Dutch government has allocated 12 million euros to the BRICKS project as a part of the BSIK investment program. The Ministry of Economic Affairs announced this on November 28, 2003. BRICKS is coordinated by CWI. Furthermore, the institute participates in two other ICT projects selected for BSIK funding, MultimediaN and Virtual Lab e-Science.
The BSIK projects are intended to stimulate the Dutch knowledge economy. BRICKS contributes to this goal by both fundamental and applied research in informatics. Apart from CWI, NWO and universities from Utrecht, Delft, Twente and Eindhoven also participate in this project. MultimediaN is concerned with the storing, handling and access of multimedia data. CWI researchers from the Information Systems (INS) and Probability, Networks and Algorithms (PNA) clusters play a large role in the project, together with several partners. Goal of the Virtual Lab e-Science is to enhance research and development by using technologies like high performance networking, grid computing and virtual reality.
