You are cordially invited to a free “Drinks & Data” meetup (organised by CWI and ADS) with three prominent speakers from the CIDR2023 conference.

Following the Conference on Innovative Data systems Research (CIDR2023) on Wednesday 11 January, CWI and Amsterdam Data Science are hosting a free 'Drinks & Data' meetup with three prominent speakers from the conference. This meetup is in the same venue (Mövenpick Hotel Amsterdam as CIDR.

Ana Klimovic from ETH, who previously worked with Google on tf.data (the data manipulation API from TensorFlow) will talk about this and her follow up system Cashew.

Matei Zaharia, the creator of Apache Spark during his PhD at Berkeley, now associate professor at Stanford, and co-founder of Databricks (who have a large R&D presence in Amsterdam), will talk about his latest work on Machine Learning.

Jordan Tigani, the originator of the BigQuery system at Google, and now founder of MotherDuck, will for the first time speak in public about the plans of his new company, that recently raised $47.5M just 6 months after being founded. MotherDuck was created in partnership with DuckDB Labs, which in turn is the CWI spin-off behind the open-source DuckDB systems, very popular now among data scientists working with python and R.

The schedule is as follows:

14:00 - 14:30 walk in
14:30 - 14:35 opening by Peter Boncz (CWI and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), who chairs
14:35 - 15:20 Scalable Input Data Processing for Resource-Efficient ML - Ana Klimovic (ETH)
15:20 - 16:05 Natural Language Meets Query Processing - Matei Zaharia (Stanford University and Databricks)
16:05 - 16:50 The end of “Big Data” and what the duck you can do about it - Jordan Tigani (MotherDuck)
16:50 - 17:30 Drinks & Networking

While this Amsterdam Data Science (ADS) meetup is in the same venue as CIDR, it is free and you do not have to be registered in the conference to attend. Please go to the Meetup Page for more information, latest updates, and to register you are attending.
