Science and Innovation with Thunderstorms (SAINT)

Thunderstorms continue to pose puzzles to our physical understanding. Transient Luminous Events appear high above thunderclouds, and high energy emissions (gamma-rays, positrons, neutrons) are measured both as longer lasting glows and as flashes. Lightning leader propagation and attachment (possibly with subsequent damage) are another topic of study.

Description and aim

Thunderstorms continue to pose puzzles to our physical understanding. Transient Luminous Events appear high above thunderclouds, and high energy emissions (gamma-rays, positrons, neutrons) are measured both as longer lasting glows and as flashes. Lightning leader propagation and attachment (possibly with subsequent damage) are another topic of study.

 

The winter school 

will focus on modelling and simulations of these phenomena. It is part of the educational programme of the European network SAINT http://www.saint-h2020.eu, and open to other participants as well. It is aimed both at modellers and non-modellers at about PhD level. In the morning there will be lectures on physical modelling and on numerical techniques, and in the afternoon there will be hands on coding and demonstrations of codes available within the community. One day will be devoted to time and project management.

 

The workshop 

is part of the research program of the SAINT network. It is open to (at least) the European community studying the physics of TLEs, TGFs, lightning attachment etc. The workshop will feature review talks, progress reports and focussed work sessions in splinter groups.
