Het CWI heeft een aantal spin-off bedrijven: organisaties opgericht door CWI-medewerkers, met ondersteuning van het CWI. Het opzetten van spin-off bedrijven is een belangrijke manier voor kennisinstituten zoals het CWI om de fundamentele kennis door te laten stromen naar toepassingen in de maatschappij en om tegelijkertijd hoogwaardige banen te scheppen.

SWAT.engineering

SWAT.engineering is het spin-off bedrijf dat resultaten uit de CWI onderzoeksgroep SWAT commercieel beschikbaar maakt. De diensten die SWAT.engineering levert zijn interessant voor alle bedrijven en instellingen die hun software als key asset beheren en exploiteren. SWAT.engineering gebruikt technologieën die niet alleen software ontwikkeling kunnen helpen verbeteren (met meer grip op kwaliteit en kosten), maar ook kunnen helpen met vergaren van inzicht en behalen van kostenbesparingen bij (grootschalig) software onderhoud.
Bij deze stand demonstreren we aan de ene kant domain modeling, rapid prototyping and code generatie technieken (om software development te ondersteunen). Aan de andere kant laten we ook prototype reverse engineering technieken zien die specifieke vragen over bestaande software automatisch kunnen beantwoorden.
We gaan graag in gesprek met bedrijven die hun software ontwikkeling en onderhoud willen optimaliseren, door onze technologieën in te zetten en aan te passen aan de specifieke context van het domein, de legacy software, of gebruikte software technieken.
Seita
Felix Claessen
Seita is a CWI spin-off facilitating massive demand response for electricity retail markets. As renewable resources penetrate the market they threaten traditional business models and introduce opportunities for storage and demand response. To assess the business opportunities for trading flexibility, CWI and Seita developed the financial risk exposure (FiRE) tool within a European innovation project. Additionally, Seita is conducting trials with software as a service to mitigate imbalance risk through the use of dynamic retail tariffs. This service enables energy companies to get the most out of aggregators, by distributing the value of flexibility along the supply chain.
Stokhos

Stokhos started as a scientific mathematical project named REPRO with the aim to reduce ambulance response times. The potential social impact motivated the foundation of Stokhos. We at Stokhos are all very enthusiastic about mathematics and science and are tirelessly working on making the world a safer place. As our products were first developed for the medical emergency market, we have a strong affinity with the medical emergency field. All members of our team, do, for example, have valid first aid certification.
MonetDB Solutions

The MonetDB team at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) has been pioneering column stores technology since 1993, based on the intuition that simplicity of a database kernel and novel software stack is essential for a break-through in query processing speed. At a time when joins were considered one of the prime performance hindrances, main-memory a scarce resource, and cost-based multi purpose optimizer, the MonetDB team relied on extensive join processing, fully materialized intermediate relational tables in virtual memory, and a three-layered software stack focused on strategic, tactical, and operational optimization decisions.
