Wearable technology is becoming more integrated into everyday life. By embedding sensors in textiles, fashion that senses the wearer reactions can be produced. The new, promising, possibilities are shown during an interactive lecture by designer Borre Akkersdijk together with CWI researchers at the 20th edition of CWI in Bedrijf, the annual networking day of the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam. The event takes place on Thursday 4 June under the theme of 'Everything Smart'. The other keynote speakers are Rob van Gijzel, mayor of Eindhoven, and René Penning de Vries. There are also a number of demonstrations of recent CWI research.

Wearing Sense: Smart Fashion
During the lecture of textile designer Borre Akkersdijk from byBorre, a smart fashion experiment, in collaboration with researchers from the CWI Distributed Interactive Systems (DIS) research group, will happen. “We won’t reveal too much because we want to keep it exciting,” Pablo Cesar, leader of the DIS research group says. His group focuses on modelling and control of complex media objects, including real-time media and sensor data, which are both interactive and distributed. “Possible applications of smart fashion range from entertainment to education, from logistical questions to recreational needs,”Borre Akkersdijk adds. Akkersdijk investigates, as a visionary designer, the possibilities of innovative production methods and materials. Thanks to this mindset he has been working with, among others, Maarten Baas, Louis Vuitton, Piet Hein Eek and Nike.

This year’s edition of CWI in Bedrijf (CWI in Business) is entirely devoted to the emergence of intelligent technology in all areas of life. At the matchmaking market demonstrations of smart technology of CWI are shown, for instance in the field of programming languages, sensor technology, deep learning, traffic management, information retrieval, smart energy and smart fashion. CWI in Bedrijf 2015 is freely accessible after registration.
