    Editorial duties

Associate editor (until 2010 editor) of the journal Computational Methods in Applied Mathematics (CMAM)

    Research team

Until December 2001 I was leader of CWI's research programme Modeling, Analysis and Simulation: Computational Fluid Dynamics . Since January 2002 this programme is headed by B. Koren, under the new name Modeling, Analysis and Simulation: Computing and Control .

CWI fellow January 2002 I was elected CWI fellow, which implies freedom from administrative duties and full freedom in research. At the moment the main topics I'm working on are: Numerical singular perturbation problems (with G.I.Shishkin, IMM Ekaterinburg, Russia), Space mapping and defect correction for inverse problems in electromagnetics (together with a PhD student: D. Echeverria at CWI), and Multigrid methods for hp-adaptive discontinuous Galerkin methods.

December 2006 I formally retired. This leaves me with the status of emeritus, with only few obligations and a complete freedom to do research and other interesting things.

Since 2007 I'm running my own institute: IPIR .

    Mathematics communication

"I have long argued that mathematicians ought to make a greater effort to communicate their ideas and research effectively not only to the general public but also to their own mathematical colleagues and to scientists and engineers. I have attended far too many mathematics lectures where even mathematicians quickly lose the talk's thread and begin to nod off, and I have glanced at too many research papers that fail to explain why a given topic is worth pursuing or to put the material in a broader context."

  • Self-corruption in Dutch education:
Picture of the board (until 2010) of the Dutch educational institution "InHolland".

A similar attitude we notice, e.g., with B. Molenkamp, the chairman of the Board at Amarantis Onderwijsgroep; member of the board at ROC ASA; director at KBP. The fragment below is a quote from Nieuw Amserdams Peil (20 febr 2009).

  • The study of corruption in the Netherlands and the treatment of whistleblowers is a most interesting subject that still needs more serious attention.
