Biography

In March 2017, Marleen Balvert obtained her PhD in mathematical optimization, applied to treatment planning for radiation therapy. In April 2017 she started as a postdoc in the Life Sciences & Health group at CWI, and the Bioinformatics group at Utrecht University. The central theme in Marleen's research are diseases with a genetic cause such as cancer, and she focuses on questions such as "What genetic characteristics cause the disease?" and "How can we predict which drug would work best for an individual patient?" Marleen's aim is to develop machine learning methodology that can analyse the large amount of genomic data available, and abstract information from the data that provides a next step towards answering these questions.
