Together with IT professional magazine AG Connect, CWI presents a podcast series in honour of its 75th anniversary: Superscience. In the first episode: Sander Bohte.

This year, CWI is celebrating! 75 years ago, the institute opened its doors, under the name Mathematisch Centrum. Bright minds in mathematics and computer science work at CWI, conducting fundamental, ground-breaking research that lays the foundation for future breakthroughs. During this anniversary year we take a look at some of the current research highlights. For example in our New Scientist anniversary magazine. From today it’s also possible to listen to CWI’s first podcast ‘Superscience’ which was recorded on the occasion of our 75th birthday, in collaboration with IT professional magazine AG Connect.

In the first episode of the podcast series ‘Superscience’ AG Connect journalist Thijs Doorenbosch talks to Sander Bohté, senior researcher in CWI’s Machine Learning group and professor at the University of Amsterdam and the University of Groningen. The conversation is about his most recent research breakthrough: energy efficient AI. Training and using large neural networks takes an incredible amount of energy. This hampers further development. Neural networks are derived from the way the brain works. Optimal choices were not made in doing so, however. Now it has been re-examined how our brains can do much more than the current neural networks and still use only 25 watts. Listen to the podcast (in Dutch) here:
