As of April 1, 2010, Han La Poutré of the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) , the national research institute for mathematics and computer science in the Netherlands, was appointed Professor of Informatics at the Faculty of Science of Utrecht University, his chair being ‘Adaptive Decision making with Uncertainty'. It is a part-time appointment for one day a week.
La Poutré's research will focus on making decisions in which uncertainty and dynamics play an important role and where often more parties are involved. It is closely linked to the development of intelligent, distributed IT systems that can determine capacities and anticipate future scenarios by making predictions. Application areas include energy networks (smart grids), transportation networks and patient logistics.
For four days a week, La Poutré continues his work at CWI, where he is head of the research group Multi-agent and Adaptive Computation. He and his research team have developed methods to autonomously negotiate on transport markets and to perform adaptive capacity planning in hospitals. He is a member of several international councils, including the Scientific Directory of Schloss Dagstuhl - the Leibniz Center for Informatics - and the editorial board of ACM Transactions on Internet Technology.
La Poutré was previously Professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU / e) in the Information Systems department.
