Project Energy Loan Exchange (ELE) with Seita Energy Flexibility B.V.

Task description

This project will explore a new business idea in this space, both technologically and as a business case. We want to offer a streamlined trade product, “energy loans”, to relevant market actors, which captures—by design—much of the aforementioned complexity of balancing flexibility. The aim of this project is to perform a feasibility study, evaluating the potential of energy loans in the future energy system. The project is a collaboration with the CWI spin-off Seita Energy Flexibility B.V. in Amsterdam.

The project is expected to provide work experience for two interns, one for the technical and one for the business part of the exploration, and might be applicable as content for a master thesis. They will closely collaborate with each other and members of the research group and Seita.

The technical internship will work towards an optimisation algorithm, which translates the flexibility of a given (set of) assets into bids (energy loans) that maximize profits in markets or against negotiating opponents. In particular, this requires efficiently exploring the complex space of possible offers, while balancing marginal profit and probability of acceptance under highly dynamic conditions. To this end, machine learning may be necessary to construct meaningful forecasts, and a simulation should be written for stochastic evaluation.

The research will contribute to the research group's ambition to valorize fundamental principles that find applications in practical intelligent systems. The project is embedded in a research group with experience and ongoing complementary projects on topics such as multi-agent learning, anytime online planning and control, smart energy systems, etc., and successful applicants will join a diverse team of motivated junior and senior researchers. Group’s alumni have moved on to excellent positions in academia and industry, making it a cornerstone in their career path.

Requirements

Applicants are required to have at least a Bachelor’s degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, mathematics, economics, sustainability or in comparable areas. Candidates should have a clear interest in applied research in collaboration with a startup, should be creative and independent in their work, should have interest in the application area, and should be able to cooperate with experts from different disciplines. Candidates are expected to have an excellent command of English, and experience in academic writing and presentation. The preferred programming language in this project would be Python (and useful libraries there like Jupyter notebooks and scikit-learn), but the right candidate can also code in their preferred language if needed.

Terms and conditions

Internships may be supported with the standard compensation to which organisations within NWO-I are bound, covering € 400 per month plus commuting expenses, subject to several conditions (such as a high GPA). The appointment will be for a period of 6 months. The starting date can be flexibly negotiated between May and August.
