Milestone: Enquire

Enquire is a small tool to determine many properties of the C compiler and the machine that it is run on, such as the minimum and maximum (un)signed char/int/long, and many properties of the float/ (long) double data types. As an option it produces the ANSI C float.h and limits.h files. It can also verify that these header files are correctly read by the compiler.

The Enquire tool was designed to support the production of machine-independent software -- initially for the ABC programming environment, <link> also maintained by the Distributed and Interactive Systems (DIS) group. It is also a good test case for compilers, since it exercises them with many limiting values, such as the minimum and maximum floating-point numbers.

The tool was adopted by the most commonly used C compiler GCC to produce the float.h and limits.h files.
