Artificial Intelligence Theme
Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the world, increasingly showcasing impressive results in many fields of science and society. To a large extent, this is due to fundamental progress, such as theoretical and methodological advances. CWI has longstanding fundamental research lines on various topics that are commonly considered to be cornerstones of AI. Key topics include:
In accordance with CWI's mission to benefit society, CWI also actively works on AI applications. Often, this is done in a multi-disciplinary, multi-party, collaborative setting. This ensures that key demands of end-users are met, thereby maximizing utilization and valorization potential. Key application areas include:
AI is one of the key focus themes at CWI. |

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE STORIES
AI, Media & Democracy Lab receives NL AIC Label
The AI, Media & Democracy Lab is one of the first six labs to receive the NL AIC Label. At the Lab researchers will investigate various aspects of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the media.
Tim Baarslag wins NWO-Vidi grant to study AI for better procurement negotiations
CWI researcher Tim Baarslag received a NWO-Vidi grant to develop new negotiation and coordination algorithms that can procure multiple deals with multiple partners.
Breakthrough in energy efficient artificial intelligence
Thanks to a mathematical breakthrough, AI applications can become a hundred to a thousand times more energy efficient. This will make it possible to put much more elaborate AI in chips, enabling applications to run on a smartphone or smartwatch where before this was done in the cloud.
AI Calculates Best Treatment Plan
A computer that calculates an entire series of optimized treatment plans for prostate cancer in 30 seconds – that took some getting used to for medical specialists. Using artificial intelligence, the computer presented better plans and more insight than the doctors thought possible. The first patients are due to be treated accordingly already this year.
Cultural AI and its steady acceptance in the heritage sector
The heritage sector is learning to embrace artificial intelligence. This certainly is encouraging, according to CWI researcher Jacco van Ossenbruggen and Martijn Kleppe, head of research at the National Library of the Netherlands. Both researchers advocate the use AI, and point out recent advances in this field.
