CWI Soirée and Van Wijngaarden Awards

Since 2006 and every five years, CWI presents the Van Wijngaarden Award to a mathematician and computer scientist of special significance during the festive Soirée. The award is named after Adriaan van Wijngaarden (1916-1987), informatics pioneer and former director of the Mathematisch Centrum, now known as CWI.

On 2 November 2016, the Van Wijngaarden Awards were awarded to mathematician Sara van de Geer and computer scientist Xavier Leroy. Previous awards went to Nancy Lynch and Persi Diaconis (2006), and Éva Tardos and John Butcher (2011). The Van Wijngaarden Awards consists of a bronze sculpture by Hanneke van den Bergh. The next presentation of the Van Wijngaarden Awards will take place on 18 November 2021.

Early October every year, during 'the Weekend for Science', CWI and other institutes at Amsterdam Science Park organize the Open Dag (Open House). We open our doors for everyone who wants to find out more about our institute. Every research group presents itself through demonstrations, games, puzzles or popular talks.

The Open Dag 2020 has been cancelled. We hope to see you again on Saturday 2 October 2021.

CWI Soirée and Dijkstra Fellowships

Since 2019 and every five years, CWI celebrates the granting of the Dijkstra Fellowships. These fellowships are introduced by CWI to honor scientists for their groundbreaking work related to CWI’s research themes. The Dijkstra Fellowships are named in honor of the eminent mathematician and computer scientist Edsger Dijkstra, who developed groundbreaking work at CWI, such as his shortest path algorithm.

The first Dijkstra Fellowships were awarded to David Chaum and Guido van Rossum. Both researchers received the fellowship award for their exceptional contribution to mathematics and computer science.
