General

It is naturally desirable for users to familiarise themselves with the layout of the library, so that they can quickly and easily find the literature they require. In practice, however, difficulties can arise in the use of the library, and it is to be remembered that the library staff are always available to help in the solving these problems.

Any queries concerning the availability and location of publications, library procedures, etc., should be directed to the Information Desk. Assistance with bibliographical problems and subject searches may also be requested.

To borrow publications you need a library pass which is available from the Information Desk. If you are not affiliated to the CWI you need an official document certifying your identity.

For rates check the attached table.

If you require a publication which is not available in our library, it can be requested for you by means of inter-library loan from another library. This service is available to CWI employees only. The library provides inter-library loan services to other libraries. If you are not a CWI employee, you can obtain a publication from the CWI library via your local library.

Photocopying service

A copying machines is available for the use of all library visitors. If you are unable to make the copies yourself, the library will do it for you. However, a rate will be applicable.

Rules for borrowers

    • Borrowers must have a library pass. (Non CWI employees must buy one; for CWI employees it is free of charge.)
    • The following publications may not be borrowed:

      o journals

      o bibliographies

      o collected works

      o tables

      o reference works

      o manuals

o all other publications bearing a yellow spine label
  • The borrower is responsible for the publications borrowed. It is not allowed to lend to a third party!! In case of damage or loss the borrower is obliged to pay the replacement value of the material plus handling charges.
  • Borrowed material may not be taken abroad. It should be returned previously.
  • The publications which are returned by mail must be packed in adequately protective packing material.
  • It is possible to make a reservation for a maximum of 3 publications at the same time that are currently on loan.
  • If a library user does not obey the rules (at the library's discretion), he/she may be excluded from borrowing for an indefinite period of time.

The following rules do not apply to CWI employees

  • Borrowers may purchase an AdamNet pass instead, this will be issued along with the CWI library pass. The AdamNet pass will entitle borrowers to obtain library passes from the University Libraries of the Free University of Amsterdam (VU) and the University of Amsterdam, the Public Library of Amsterdam and some of the faculty libraries of the "Hogeschool van Amsterdam" without additional charge. AdamNet passholders may obtain a CWI library pass with the same expiry date without additional payment.
  • The pass is valid for the period of 1 year. Students are entitled to a reduced rate on presentation of a valid University ID.
  • Up to 6 publications may be borrowed at the same time.
  • The loan period is 4 weeks.
  • It is possible to request an extension of the loan period. Use the Renewal function of the WebOpac. This extension is granted for a maximum of three consecutive periods. After that the publication has to be returned to the library where it can be borrowed again. If during an extended loan period publications are required by the library, these are to be returned immediately.
  • Before, or at the latest, on the due date, the borrowed material has to be returned to the library, unless a borrower (at his own initiative!) requests an extension. If the library, as a consequence of a loan period being overdue, has to demand the return of a borrowed item, there is a charge of €2,50 per borrowed item. There is no warning in advance. After 2 requests to return a publication to the library, the borrower is temporarily excluded from borrowing other items.
