Abstract: Sexual reproduction is modeled an investigated in the formal framework of John von Neumann's theory of self-reproducing cellular automata. It is argued that the transition from asexual to sexual reproduction necessitates a change in number and structure of the genetic tapes involved. It is shown that the recombination of the parent's characteristics closely conforms to nature. Similarities with biological systems are discussed and e.g. a concrete hypothsis on the X-Y mechanism for the physiology of sexual processes is presented.
