Control and System Theory

This group is a subgroup of Scientific Computing and Control Theory (MAC2)
Coordinator of this sub-theme: Jan van Schuppen

Main focus

Concept, theorems, and algorithms are developed for control theory, for realization, and for system identification.
The research is motivated by problems of engineering and of systems biology.

Current projects

 (1) Control of distributed systems.

A framework, theorems, and algorithms are developed for control of distributed systems both with and without communication between controllers.
(J.H. van Schuppen, C4C Project).

(2) Coordination control of distributed systems.
A coordinator of a distributed system imposes restrictions on the interaction of all subsystems after which local controllers can be designed in a parallel way such that together the distributed system meets the control objectives.
The investigation is restricted to:

  • coordination control of linear systems

(P.L. Kemper, A.C.M. Ran, J.H. van Schuppen: C4C);

  • coordination control of discrete-event systems

(O. Boutin, T. Masopust, J.H. van Schuppen; J. Komenda (CAS.IM/Brno) DISC);

  • coordination control of Gaussian systems

(J.H. van Schuppen, N. Pambakian).

(3) Control of piecewise-affine hybrid systems.
Control synthesis for reachability based on geometry, algebra, linear inequalities, and on complexity.
(P.J. Collins, L.C.H.G.M. Habets, J.H. van Schuppen; C4C).

(4) Realization and system identification.
Algorithms and theory for realization and for identifiability of several classes of dynamic systems, including hybrid systems and Nash systems.
(M. Petreczky (U. Maastricht), J.H. van Schuppen).

(5) Control and system theory for systems biology.
Biochemical reaction networks require modeling, systems theory and system identification.
Focus on glycolysis and development of red blood cells.
(D. De Vos, J.H. van Schuppen).
