Earth sciences and energy

There is a strong tradition of research in earth sciences at CWI. CWI has for instance developed mathematical models and methods for the control of dike heights, to protect the Netherlands against flooding. CWI also has a long track record in air pollution modelling and simulation. Current earth sciences research at CWI focuses on applications in climatology, oceanography, meteorology and large-scale ecological systems. Research projects are carried out in close collaboration with KNMI, NIOZ, Deltares and CPB.
Earth sciences is also related to our current energy issues. Oil and gas supplies are projected to become increasingly scarce in the 21st century. Research at CWI focuses on the increased use of sustainable energy sources. CWI works for instance on the development of smart energy networks to allow green energy distribution. CWI also carries out research on energy generation by offshore wind farms and controlled nuclear fusion. Energy projects are carried out with industry and research partners such as NUON, KEMA, the FOM Institute for Plasma Physics and ECN.
