Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) is a scientific research institute specialized in mathematics and computer science, and is located in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

To give focus to our efforts, we concentrate on five broad, societally-relevant themes that align with NWO's strategy:

• Earth sciences and energy
• Life sciences
• The data explosion
• Societal logistics
• Software as service

We conduct pioneering research in mathematics and computer science, and transfer the results of this to industrial and societial partners. Our fundamental research in these areas will provide a deeper understanding of problems in health care, climate, communication, mobility, security and service domains.

CWI operates at the core of European research on mathematics and computer science, together with other prominent institutions such as INRIA (France) and Max Planck (Germany). CWI serves as a breeding ground for academic staff and young talented researchers and initiates new lines of long term research in high risk areas.
