Research

In 1975 I started my career as a scientific assistant at the Mathematical Center (MC). At the end of 1977 I started as a scientific programmer at the department Numerieke Wiskunde (NW), sharing that position the first years with Joke Blom, because working in part time was not so popular in the seventies. I participated in many projects e.g., on ordinary differential equations, Runge-Kutta methods, eigenvalue problems and basic linear algebra methods.
Directly from the introduction of the supercomputers in the Netherlands, I specialized in high performance computing. I have optimized and parallelized lots of programs on multigrid, Jacobi-Davidson, adaptive grid-refinement methods, least-squares spectral element solvers, fluid-structure interfaces, and collaborated together with several research groups inside and outside CWI, e.g., FOM Rijnhuizen and TU Delft Aerospace Engineering.
In 2010 I joined the group of Prof. Ute Ebert (MAC3) and since that time I am involved with software on discharge modeling for plasma technology and for lightning. The software includes Monte-Carlo particle, fluid and hybrid methods, and all codes must be parallelized to increase their employability. Another separate problem is the enormous amount of data produced by the simulations. How should it be handled properly and what will be the best way of visualization?
