Software Engineering Distinguished Service Award for Paul Klint

Paul Klint, Research fellow at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) is awarded the 2015 IEEE TCSE Software Engineering Distinguished Service Award. The award is presented annually to individual researches for their contributions.

Paul Klint, Research fellow at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) is awarded the 2015 IEEE TCSE Software Engineering Distinguished Service Award. The award is presented annually to individual researches for their contributions. The Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world’s largest professional association for the advancement of technology. TCSE is the Technical Committee that oversees research and development in Software Engineering.

The Awards Committee praised the impact of Klint’s works both on research and education in software engineering and on the software industry in general. The central theme in his research is understanding existing software and developing tools for the systematic analysis, construction and improvement of software. During his career Klint supervised many influential students such as Mark van den Brand, Arie van Deursen, Leon Moonen,  Frank Tip, Jurgen Vinju, Eelco Visser, Joost Visser and many others.

Klint has been initiator of various international cooperations and organizations such as the Dutch, French and German cooperation that resulted in ERCIM, the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics. He was responsible for the cooperation with the French research institute INRIA, also aiming at strengthening the European research infrastructure and is founding president of the European Association for Programming Languages and Systems (EAPLS).

Klint has also been active as co-founder of the very successful CWI spin-off the Software Improvement Group (SIG), that has today circa 100 employees. Until 2008, he was chairman of ICT-research Platform Nederland (IPN), where he contributed to the visibility and development of computer science research in The Netherlands. In 2012, Klint was appointed as Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau.
