Jos Baeten new general director of CWI

 Prof. dr. Jos C.M. Baeten will be the new general director of the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam. The General Board of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) confirmed his appointment on Monday 6 June. On 1 October 2011 Baeten succeeds the current general director, Prof. dr. Jan Karel Lenstra, who continues working at CWI as a senior researcher until his retirement in 2012. Baeten obtained a PhD in mathematics in 1985. Since 1991, he has been affiliated with the Eindhoven University of Technology as Professor of Theoretical Computer Science, and since 2010 as Professor of Systems Engineering.

The Board of CWI describes Baeten as a very prominent researcher, with an excellent understanding of both mathematics and computer science, and extensive experience in attracting external funding. He has been successful in contract research and valorization and is a very experienced manager. He was, for instance, twice Dean and twice Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the TU/e. He was also founder and director of the IPA research school, scientific director of the Stan Ackermans Institute and initiator of the Eindhoven Embedded Systems Institute. Peter van Laarhoven, CWI Board Chairman, writes: "Baeten is a powerful director, caring for people in an organization."

Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica
Founded in 1946, Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) is the national research institute for mathematics and computer science in the Netherlands. It is located at Science Park Amsterdam and is part of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The institute is internationally focused and renowned. Over 150 researchers conduct pioneering research and share their acquired knowledge with society. Thirty-four researchers are also employed as professors at universities. The institute has generated twenty-one spin-off companies.
