Semantic web development for life science and health-care
Huajun Chen from the Zhejiang University in China talks about semantic web development for life science and health-care: experiences learned from DartGrid.
Location: Room M376
The semantic web technologies enable semantic integration of heterogeneous data resources over the web based on shared ontologies in biomedical domain. Huajun Chen: "In this talk, we first survey the state of art in the field of semantic web development for life science and health-care. The feasibility and benefit of utilizing this enhanced integration capability to map and integrate various biomedical data resources is then investigated. Next, a large scale Semantic Web platform called DartGrid is introduced from the perspective of a specific domain: Traditional Chinese Medicine. The system integrates tens of scientific databases, and provides a variety of information retrieval and knowledge discovery services for medical practitioners.
Legacy relational databases are mapped to the semantic web layer, which enables ontology-based query and search across database boundaries. Besides, a new methodology named semantic graph mining is proposed accordingly, which uses the semantic graph model to integrate graph mining and ontology reasoning for better analyzing and discovering interesting patterns from large and complex network of medical concepts and objects. We illustrate the potential capability of the approach in use cases such as personalized health-care and drug discovery, efficacy, and safety analysis with TCM characteristics."
Huajun Chen, Associated Professor of Zhejiang University. He received a bachelor degree in biochemical engineering in 2000, and PhD degree in computer science in 2004 respectively, both from Zhejiang University. He was a visiting assistant professor in Yale Center for Medical Informatics of Yale University from June, 2006 to June, 2007.
He did also a visiting researcher position in School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University. His major research interest is the semantic web, grid computing and their applications in life science and heath-care. He won best paper award in the in-use track of ISWC2006. He is on organizing committee for several events relevant to semantic web for life science and health-care such as SeS workshop at AAAI2008, HCLS workshop at WWW2007/2008. He is also a co-author of a book entitled with "Semantic Grid" published by Springer.
