On the resolution of some large scale applied optimization problems

Important practical optimization problems, such as those arising in Medical Imaging,
Shape Design of structures and Machine Learning, are of a very large dimension,
which render them unsolvable by state of the art Interior Point methods. One has to
resort to first-order gradient-type algorithms or develop special purpose schemes that
are tailored to the specific structure of the underlying problem. We analyze some of the
above problems and describe their resolution by the aforementioned methods.
Ben-Tal is a professor at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa. His research work is in the area of nonlinear optimization. He wrote recently two monographs: `Lectures on Modern Convex Optimization' and `Robust Optimization'. More information about his books can be found at:
