Lex Schrijver elected AMS Fellow

Fri, 08/03/2013 - 15:50

The American Mathematical Society (AMS) chose its first AMS Fellows, and among them is Lex Schrijver from the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) and the University of Amsterdam. Other Dutch members of the 2013 inaugural class are Frank den Hollander (Leiden University and CWI Governing Board), Robbert Dijkgraaf (Institute of Advanced Study and UvA), Jacob Korevaar (em. UvA), Hendrik Lenstra (Leiden University) and Eduard Looijenga (Utrecht University). The AMS Fellowship program "recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of mathematics".

Lex Schrijver is a world-renowned authority on discrete mathematics and optimization. In 2005 Schrijver was awarded the prestigious NWO Spinoza Prize, the highest scientific award in the Netherlands. To the general public he is best known for his work on the optimization of the Dutch railway timetables. In 2008 Schrijver and his team won the Franz Edelman Award. Since 2009 he is a Fellow of SIAM - the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Popularizing mathematics is important to Schrijver and on many occasions he entertained a broad audience, eg, during the Lowlands pop festival. On 25 April 2013 CWI organizes its annual CWI Lectures in honour of Lex Schrijver, on the occasion of his retirement: the ‘CWI Lexures – Discrete Mathematics and Optimization’.
