The software renovation project studies the problems occurring in legacy systems and develops tools, techniques and processes to address these problems. The software renovation research is conducted in close cooperation with industry, taking real life legacy systems, often spanning hundreds of thousands of lines of Cobol as subject matter.

The research focusses on two problems:

  • Program comprehension: Topics addressed include type-based program analysis, documentation generation, and hypertext-based tools for program understanding.
  • Program transformation: Topics addressed include program traversals, layout preservation, and dialect migrations.
