Exploratory research

Research group: Scientific Computing and Control Theory (MAS2)

Start: 1997-01-01
End: 2000-12-31

Project coordinator: Piet Hemker

In this project numerical aspects of the computation of strongly convective flows are studied. The mathematical formulation leads to singular perturbation problems. Strong international interest exists in this field. The present activity concerns a close cooperation between the Institute for Mathematics and Mechanics (Ekaterinburg, Russia) and CWI.

The present study emphazises the uniform convergence in 2D domains. In particular, it is studied what special non-uniform grids are required for these problems. In conjunction with this, possibilities of adaptive meshes will be investigated.

Activities

Singular perturbation problems
The activities on singular perturbation problems are embedded in a joint project with the KUN (prof. A.O.H. Axelsson) and half a dozen groups of Russian numerical analysts. An international workshop on the subject is organized, to be held at CWI on 20 - 21 November, 1997.
The activities are planned to be continued until December 1997. In April 1998 an Oberwolfach meeting will be organised on the subject. Except for minor reconnaissances no further activities are planned.
